First Aid at the German Red Cross
A Guide for Everyone
First aid is the immediate medical assistance provided before professional help arrives—whether after an accident, in the event of an injury, or sudden illness. The German Red Cross (DRK) offers comprehensive training to teach people how to help effectively in emergencies. This guide provides you with an introduction to the basics of first aid and the role of the DRK.
Why First Aid?
First aid can save lives. In many emergency situations, the first few minutes are crucial in preventing serious consequences or alleviating pain. It's all about taking the right actions. Providing first aid means that you trust yourself to act in critical moments and that you take on responsibility.
The Four Initial Steps of First Aid
1. Stay calm – this helps you make clear decisions and also calms the affected person.
2. Ensure your own safety – and that of others. If you are at the scene of an accident, secure the area to prevent further accidents. 3. Call 112 – this is the emergency number. Provide the following information: where the emergency is and who you are, and WAIT for further questions! The dispatch center will ask everything else and stay on the line if needed until the emergency services arrive.
4. Provide first aid – rely on your skills and knowledge.

Important First Aid Measures
1. Is the affected person conscious?
Speak to them and gently shake their shoulders. If they don't respond, check their breathing by opening the airway by tilting the head back while lifting the chin. If the person is breathing normally, place them in the recovery position to keep the airway clear.
2. If there is no normal breathing, perform CPR!
In the case of cardiac arrest, immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is crucial. Press 30 times on the center of the chest, then give two rescue breaths.
3. Treat wounds!
If the person is bleeding, treat the wound with clean materials if possible. Use sterile dressings if available, and secure them. For severe bleeding, apply pressure to the wound and apply a pressure bandage.
4. Is the person in shock?
Shivering, trembling, nervousness, cold, and clammy skin—these can occur after accidents or with severe injuries. Lay the person flat, cover them, and calm them down. Ensure a quiet environment and immediately call for help.
