Grand Ducal Office Building
The monumental administrative building is located northwest of the old town, directly by the Pfaffenteich. The structure was built between 1842 and 1845 as part of the move of the Grand Ducal administration from Ludwigslust to Schwerin.
At that time
The Grand Ducal Office Building was commissioned by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich and, upon completion in 1845, housed the administration of the sovereign estates in the Domanial Office of Schwerin. In addition to the necessary offices, rooms for extensive files, and halls for representation, the corner pavilions contained service apartments.
Style
The representative, three-and-a-half-story building was constructed in a classical style based on designs by Ludwig August Bartning. Its 23-axis façade is divided into a three-axis central risalit and two corner pavilions. The adjacent courtyard housed stables and carriage houses as well as an extensive garden. The complex emphasized the representative character of the Grand Ducal administrative complex.
