Royal Supplier Krefft
The building of the royal confectioner Krefft, constructed in 1906/08, defined the intersection of two commercial streets as a corner building. His ancestors had already founded a confectionery at this location in the second half of the 18th century.
At that time
In 1877, Friedrich Krefft took over the management of the establishment. Like his ancestors, he was also appointed as a royal confectioner.
By 1891, there were already 11 confectioneries in Schwerin, making it a tough business for a coffeehouse. Despite the strong competition, the widow Betty Krefft successfully ran the coffeehouse for 20 years.
She also had the new house built by the construction company Clewe in 1908/09. The initial interior consisted of simple wooden chairs and tables. Betty Krefft had to hire a master confectioner, otherwise she would not have been able to continue the business. The only son of Betty and Fritz was Carl.
Carl Friedrich Leopold Krefft was born in 1882. When his father died, he was only 17 years old. After his father's death, Carl became the manager and took over the coffeehouse in 1919.
Under his leadership, the cafe received a new appearance. Comfortable club chairs in the rooms and wall paintings gave the cafe a cozy and elegant character.
Style
Built in view of the castle, the historicist residential and commercial building sets an important urban accent at the intersection of Puschkin and Schlossstraße.
