Since 1974, the colorful mosaic sculpture by Franz-Ulrich Poppe has stood on the shore of Lake Burg along Graf-Schack-Allee. Initially, during its first redesign, it was placed on a small terrace as a play sculpture. Native Schwerin residents may recall playing on the concrete as children. Over the years, the lakeside path became overgrown, and the wild boar disappeared into the thickets, thus fading from view and memory.
The planning for the Federal Garden Show in 2009 brought the sculpture back into discussion. The lakeside area of Lake Burg was to become the Castle Promenade, raising the question of what to do with the wild boar. In the meantime, it had suffered greatly in the undergrowth. The decision was made: the animal belongs on the Castle Promenade and must be preserved. Thus, the damaged and soiled wild boar was restored by the artist and reinstalled in 2008, just a few meters from its original location. While it may no longer be officially designated as a play sculpture, the wild boar has managed to maintain its place in Schwerin as a playful focal point or fond memory. And perhaps, some children will still be placed on its back for a photo.
Franz-Ulrich PoppeFranz-Ulrich Poppe wurde 1939 in Lommatzsch, Sachsen, geboren. Von 1954 bis 1956 absolvierte er eine Lehre als Porzellanmodelleur in Meißen. Es folgte ein Studium an der Fachhochschule für angewandte Kunst Heiligendamm, an der er 1960 den Abschluss eines Diplom-Designers für Baukeramik erwarb. Anschließend war Poppe als Industrieformgestalter in Meißen tätig. Seit 1961 arbeitet er freiberuflich in Waren. 1966 absolvierte er eine Meisterprüfung als Kacheltöpfermeister und erhielt 1968 eine staatliche Anerkennung als Kunstschaffender im Handwerk.
Insgesamt 15 Figuren nach Art des Wildschweins hat der Künstler für den Nordosten geschaffen. Seine Mosaiksteine brachte er auf reine Beton- oder Terrazzomodelle auf. Eine weitere Tierplastik von Franz-Ulrich Poppe – eine Schildkröte – steht auf dem Spielplatz Löwenplatz in Schwerin. Weitere Arbeiten umfassen Spiel- und Kleinplastiken, keramische Wandgestaltungen, Brunnenanlagen, Gartenkeramiken und denkmalpflegerische Tätigkeiten. 2003 konnte Franz Poppe mit Unterstützung der Stadt Waren und des dortigen Museums- und Geschichtsvereins das in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern einmalige Kacheltöpfermuseum eröffnen. Er erhielt diverse Kunst- und Kulturpreise.
