After a few steps on the other side of the beech tree, we find ourselves at the resting place of the court composer Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken. He was born on November 16, 1810, in Bleckede on the Elbe River, where his father was an executioner.
From an early age, the boy stood out for his musicality and received a grand-ducal scholarship that enabled him to study music. He then joined the Schwerin Court Orchestra as a violist and violinist. Kücken preferred texts for his compositions that originated from folk songs. This led to the creation of songs such as "Ach, wie ist’s möglich dann" (Oh, how is it possible then), "Reich‘ mir eine Kanne Wein" (Hand me a jug of wine), or "Du bist wie eine Blume" (You are like a flower). In addition to his work in the court orchestra, Kücken also served as the director of the Schwerin Liedertafel. One of his operas was titled "Die Flucht nach der Schweiz" (The Escape to Switzerland). A large part of his compositions was created for special occasions for the princely house, earning him various honors, including the title of court composer. Nevertheless, this did not prevent him from eventually following a call to the royal court in Stuttgart. The unusually high earnings he acquired there later formed the basis for the so-called Kücken Foundation, which, according to his will, was bequeathed to the city of Schwerin. In accordance with the provisions, it served to support destitute musical talents.
After a brief stay in Paris, where he was enthusiastically celebrated, Kücken returned to Schwerin in 1861. Here, he acquired the corner house on the southern Pfaffenteich and became its most prominent resident. Unfortunately, the inscription "Kücken Foundation," made of bronze letters on the house, was carelessly lost during renovation. The bust in front of the house was created by the Schwerin sculptor Ludwig Brunow. On the evening of April 3, 1882, Friedrich Kücken was a guest at Strempelplatz, today Platz der Jugend. He used the Schwerin horse-drawn tram to return home. However, he did not disembark at his stop, Blücherstraße, today Arsenalstraße. A doctor summoned quickly could only confirm his death.
