Frida von Bülow and Hans Heinrich Leopoldi

Literary inspiration or researchers on the history of Schwerin

If we enter the cemetery at Obotritenring from the entrance next to the administration building, we will encounter, after a few steps under a large chestnut tree, the grave plaque bearing the name Frida von Bülow. She was one of the daughters of the fortress commander of Dömitz, Lieutenant Colonel Christian von Bülow, and the youthful love of Fritz Reuter. The memorial plaque that points to this fact is, in a way, also a tribute to the most significant Low German writer.

We wish to gratefully acknowledge this circumstance, for unfortunately, references to Fritz Reuter in the state capital are overall sparse. Another memorial plaque can be found at the house of the restaurant "Zur Quelle" in Schusterstraße. The poet lived in this house as a member of the Stavenhagen Reform Association when he participated in the extraordinary Landtag in 1848.

Similar memorial plaques in the Old Town commemorate remarkable events or highlight the activities of personalities in Schwerin. We owe them to the city archive director Hans Heinrich Leopoldi. As a regional researcher, district chairman of the Cultural Association, and long-time director of the Schwerin City Archive, he shaped the cultural life of the city. It is thanks to his efforts that the city archive found a suitable domicile in the Demmler Gatehouses at Platz der Jugend in 1949 after unsatisfactory provisional arrangements. Leopoldi summarized his research findings during his tenure as city archivist in his publication "The Revolution of 1848 in Schwerin." The final resting place of Hans Heinrich Leopoldi can be found on Neuer Weg on the left side, a few meters behind the grave of Richard Spethmann.
