The next grave we come across, where our memories pause, is located in plot 15C right next to the military cemetery. With his Mecklenburg bibliography, librarian Gerhard Baarck continued the work of his predecessor, Dr. Wilhelm Hees, with diligence and care, paying particular attention to the regional literature of Mecklenburg in his endeavors. Gerhard Baarck was born on October 18, 1909, as the son of a civil servant. After completing his education at the Real Gymnasium in Schwerin, he studied philosophy in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Rostock, and Kiel. Circumstances prevented him from completing his dissertation on the works of Rainer Maria Rilke.
Subsequently, he took a position as a private tutor in Kiel. Through the referral of a fellow student, he later secured a job as an editor for a publishing house at the German Dictionary in Leipzig. After military service and Soviet captivity, Baarck returned to Schwerin via the transit camp in Neubrandenburg. Initially unsuccessful in his application to the Mecklenburg State Library, he temporarily worked as a laborer for the Schwerin municipal utilities until a position became available at the Mecklenburg State Office for Library Services. It was only then, on November 16, 1952, that he commenced his later meritorious work at the Mecklenburg State Library in Schwerin.
Baarck's extensive expertise enabled him to fill a gap with his Mecklenburg bibliography. He retired shortly before his death, passing away on July 12, 1990, in Schwerin. As a profound connoisseur of Mecklenburg literature, he provided library users with expert advice. The small bronze songbird adorning his grave symbolizes his deep interest in the local fauna and flora. With occasional comments, he always professed his attachment to his homeland of Mecklenburg. Sporting a pipe in the corner of his mouth, he often masked inevitable setbacks with wit and dry humor. His keen instinct eventually led him to the right literary sources, and everyone who sought his assistance fondly remembers Gerhard Baarck.
