In Helenenstraße sits a bronze lion, looking quite relaxed in human form, holding a coin in its paw. Perhaps the lion is contemplating its investment?
The sculpture was gifted to the citizens of the state capital Schwerin on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin bank in 1996. The artwork refers to Henry the Lion, who played a significant role as the founder of Schwerin in the 12th century. In a certain sense, the Sparkasse sees itself as the city's bank since 1821. Sculptor Walther Preik humorously incorporated both stories into his work.
