In the immediate vicinity, on the other side of the path, is the gravestone of the publisher and bookseller Ludwig Davids. He was born on October 18, 1858, in Schwerin and died here on August 7, 1920. As the owner of a successful business in Schwerin, he became particularly known for publishing the history of the city of Schwerin, written by historian Wilhelm Jesse.
In addition, Davids published Low German literature and became the first publisher of Rudolf Tarnow. The fiercely contested press feud in Schwerin and Rostock between supporters and opponents of Tarnow's "Leuschendichtung" did not impress him. Success proved him right. Until his death, 62,000 copies of Tarnow's "Burrkäwers" were published by Ludwig Davids' publishing house. Later, the Hinstorff Verlag in Wismar acquired the rights and brought another 90,000 copies into circulation by 1932. The success figures refuted the notion that Tarnow's "Leuwsche Dichtung" not only harmed serious Low German literature but also tarnished the public's taste and created the impression in wide circles that Low German was only suitable for comedy. Details about the life and work of the publisher are provided in the book "Davids Enkel" from Demmler Verlag Schwerin.
