Memorial for the Victims of Euthanasia

Statue made of ceramic by Dörte Michaelis

Friend or foe. Good or evil. Left or right. Black or white. Normal or abnormal.
That would be too easy. Too "it's none of my business." Too "that's ancient history."
However, what is past must not be forgotten - that is what the approximately ten-meter-long timeline of the artwork made of colored pillars reminds us. The artist consciously chose the initially cheerful appearance of the memorial, as she deemed it appropriate for its proximity to the hospital.
Only when the viewer engages more closely with the installation do they understand the background. A large circle of pebbles serves as a spotlight, and the gaze then falls on black stumps amidst the colorful arrangements. They represent the victims of National Socialism and around 1,000 hospital murders. The question of what is normal and what is abnormal is meant to remain unanswered. The work captivates with colors. Diversity. And no clear patterns. Because life also does not follow a clear pattern, but takes different paths.
