Robert Beltz

An archaeologist revolutionized the ancient collections of Schwerin

Leaving the military cemetery towards the new path, we first reach Grave Field B. In the southeastern corner of the field, at Plot 27, we find the family grave of the educator and archaeologist Robert Beltz. Here, alongside him, rest his wife and his two daughters. Robert Beltz was born on March 14, 1854, in Nordhausen. After studying in Berlin and Göttingen, he took up a teaching position at a gymnasium in Wismar at the age of 23. However, later that year, he moved to Schwerin.

His interest in archaeology soon became apparent. In 1880, he was appointed by the then museum director Friedrich Lisch as a collaborator for the antiquities collection. Beltz took on the task of merging the two existing collections of pre-Christian and medieval antiquities in Schwerin with the grand ducal exhibits of the Antiquarium. His reorganization established the reputation of the Schwerin Museum in archaeology and led to Robert Beltz's appointment as a professor. The results of his research were published in various publications. For example, in 1882, the first overview of the antiquities in the Schwerin Museum was published. The culmination of his research in the field of regional antiquarianism was his work in 1910, The Prehistoric Antiquities of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Robert Beltz also earned great merit in monument preservation. In 1887, he founded a commission for the preservation of monuments. The Monument Protection Act of December 5, 1929, represented a significant achievement for that time and was an expression of his pioneering work. On April 1, 1913, Professor Robert Beltz retired. A memorial plaque at his residence at Lübecker Straße 121 commemorates his work in Schwerin. He passed away here on May 19, 1942.
