The Schwerin Housing Cooperative (SWG) has stood for affordable and high-quality housing in the state capital since 1957. With around 8,800 apartments and more than 10,000 members, it is one of the largest housing cooperatives in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern today. The journey to this point is an exciting story through the history of Schwerin.

When the former Workers' Housing Cooperative (AWG) "Fritz Heckert" was founded on September 2, 1957, no one could have predicted the significant role it would play in the development of Schwerin. The first apartment blocks were built in what is now the Weststadt, with future residents actively contributing to the construction.

The real breakthrough came with the construction of the industrial complex in southern Schwerin: In 1971, the foundation stone was laid for the new residential area Großer Dreesch, which was planned to accommodate up to 60,000 residents. By 1978, the 5,000th AWG apartment had been handed over.

The 1980s were marked by growth through mergers: The AWG "Reichsbahn-Post" and the non-profit cooperatives "Jean Sibelius" and "Robert Beltz" enriched the AWG's portfolio with interesting prewar and postwar buildings from the 1920s to the 1950s. By the 30th anniversary in 1987, the cooperative had more than 11,000 apartments, making it one of the largest of its kind in the GDR.

After the reunification, a new chapter began: As the "Schwerin Housing Cooperative eG," the SWG invested heavily in modernizing its portfolio. In 1994 alone, 83.5 million Deutsche Marks were invested in the future of housing. Innovative projects such as "Junge Wohnen" (Young Living) and the establishment of social management, along with the urban renewal of Neu Zippendorf, highlighted the new direction.

Today, the SWG presents itself with two modern locations in the city center and on the Großer Dreesch as a forward-looking cooperative. From the model neighborhood Tallinner/Vidiner Street, Lindenhof, Leonhard-Frank Quarter, the Waisengärten and Hafenquartier, to the Bürgelstraße with row bungalows and the "Seeterrassen" (Lake Terraces) – contemporary living concepts are emerging everywhere. Cooperative living at SWG is more than just a roof over your head. It’s living community and a piece of Schwerin’s identity.

The success of the cooperative would not be possible without the commitment of its employees. As one of the largest housing cooperatives in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, SWG offers a dynamic, supportive, and innovative work environment.
