The Schwerin Municipal Services Agency (SDS) began operations on January 1, 2001. The SDS manages several cemeteries covering a total area of over 50 hectares. Among the SDS’s responsibilities is, in particular, the management of the Old Cemetery, a historic park cemetery designed in the mid-19th century by landscape architect Theodor Klett. The cemetery also houses the burial chapel of Schwerin’s court architect Georg Adolph Demmler.
Since 2004, waste disposal and street cleaning in Schwerin have also been part of our responsibilities. Here, we organize waste disposal and street cleaning. Calculating and collecting fees is also part of our work. A highlight is the annual spring cleaning event with the “scrubbing party” at Bertha-Klingberg Platz.
Since 2006, we have been responsible for road maintenance and the upkeep of public green spaces. The Public Green Spaces/Biotopes division plans, monitors, and maintains the beautiful municipal green spaces, playgrounds, and open areas. Street trees and roadside greenery are also lovingly cared for to ensure traffic safety. And did you know that the SDS also manages 515 hectares of forest and 540 hectares of biotopes?
The road maintenance staff are true all-rounders who repair and maintain the roads in Schwerin. They also take care of traffic signs, traffic control systems, and road markings.
Public green spaces
Green public spaces, planting along roads and in urban squares, forests and biotopes, sports fields and playgrounds, as well as bathing areas and jetties – all of this falls within the remit of public green space employees.
Road maintenance
Schwerin's road network comprises around 350 kilometers of roads and paths. The road maintenance staff ensure that the roads and sidewalks are and remain in a safe condition for traffic.
Waste & street cleaning
The organization of waste disposal and street cleaning, from fee notices and tenders for disposal and cleaning services to other tasks performed by the public waste disposal authority, is handled by the Waste Management Department.
Funerals and cemeteries
A cemetery is a place for everyone who has lost a loved one, a place for memories and mourning. The employees in this area are responsible for maintaining this special place and performing other cemetery and funeral services.
