Stadtwerke Schwerin GmbH (SWS)

Reliable supplier with responsibility for the region

The Stadtwerke Schwerin GmbH (SWS) was founded in 1991 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the state capital Schwerin. Residents of Schwerin can get everything they need from one source: electricity, gas, district heating, water, as well as internet and TV products via the company's own city.kom fiber optic network. With attractive electricity and gas tariffs, Stadtwerke Schwerin is also active nationwide.

As a responsible supplier, Stadtwerke has the city of Schwerin's climate goal firmly in sight and ambitiously supports the state capital in achieving climate neutrality by 2035. Currently, 15 percent of Schwerin's district heating is generated in the geothermal and biogas plants, with the latter accounting for almost six percent. The first geothermal plant, Lankow I, complements this share of green heat with its heat output of seven megawatts, saving 7,500 tons of CO2 per year in operation.

Since 2009, Stadtwerke Schwerin has also operated a heat storage facility at its energy site in the south. Excess energy is stored here in the form of hot water. With a height of 55 meters and a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters, the heat storage facility is impressive both from the ground and from the air. To prevent excess, mostly renewable, electricity from being curtailed, Stadtwerke Schwerin has installed three electric boiler modules forming a power-to-heat system, each with a capacity of 5 megawatts, enabling the highly efficient use of surplus electricity. The power-to-heat system also feeds into the heat storage facility. The stored hot water is then used when there are discrepancies between heat demand and generation at certain times of the day.

Since 2009, Stadtwerke Schwerin has been building and operating photovoltaic systems on roofs and open spaces. The company operates several PV systems with an annual electricity generation of around four gigawatt hours and a total capacity of 4.3 megawatts peak.

Stadtwerke Schwerin aims to further expand renewable energy sources for heat and electricity. This is an integral part of their future strategy because decarbonization is essential for climate protection.

However, the main task of the municipal company is to ensure a secure supply, even in times of comprehensive transformation of the energy market. Therefore, the two fundamentally modernized and highly efficient combined heat and power plants in Lankow and the south provide a necessary basis until new renewable plants can be connected to the grid in stable operation.

Commitment to environmental projects and initiatives

As a responsible company, Stadtwerke Schwerin is involved in various environmental projects, such as peatland conservation and forest conversion. Since 2012, approximately 41.5 hectares of moorland have been successfully rewetted, equivalent to about 58 soccer fields. For the growing generations in the city and its surrounding areas, the company offers diverse environmental education projects for children, from kindergarten to secondary level II.

Stadtwerke Schwerin lives up to its responsibility for the region, especially for the state capital Schwerin. As one of the ten largest employers in the city, the company offers secure prospects in a responsible working environment. A strong team of more than 800 employees is spread across the Stadtwerke network. The sense of regional cohesion is also evident in the company's diverse engagement in initiatives and projects in the areas of sports, culture, and social activities within the radius of the state capital Schwerin and beyond.
