When the Housing Association Schwerin (WGS) was founded by the city of Schwerin in 1992, a clear goal was at the forefront: to provide affordable housing for broad segments of the population. Today, more than three decades later, WGS remains a municipal landlord and is also a modern real estate company actively shaping the future of Schwerin.
With a portfolio of around 10,000 residential units, WGS is the largest landlord in the state capital. Under the leadership of Managing Director Kristian Meier-Hedrich and a four-member management team, approximately 90 employees take care of the wishes and concerns of the tenants.
More than just renting
WGS sees itself as an active designer in the neighborhoods: it is a partner in the implementation of the Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK) "Living in Schwerin." Affordable housing is fundamentally at the center of its daily work.
In addition, WGS is also committed to social issues: from supporting asylum seekers to donating to local sports clubs and promoting the children's holiday camp of the unemployed association – WGS demonstrates itself as a reliable partner of the urban community. This commitment is particularly creatively expressed in art projects, such as the design of the Rahlstedt high-rise, where art becomes a medium for encounter.
As an important economic partner, especially for local craft businesses, WGS also contributes to regional economic strength. With its philosophy of openness, honesty, and social responsibility, it actively shapes not only living space but also the future of Schwerin.
From fire station to modern service center
The customer service center of WGS presents itself in a particularly charming way: in the historic Old Fire Station at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 4, history and modernity merge in a unique manner. Where fire engines and fire horses were stationed for more than 92 years, the WGS tenant center now welcomes its visitors. The building, constructed more than 100 years ago and owned by WGS since 2001, was extensively renovated in 2016. The characteristic high ceilings were cleverly integrated into a modern spatial concept. In consultation rooms designed like small houses, against the backdrop of a radiant Schwerin skyline, tenants today find competent contacts.
