Wilhelm Heeß

The founder of the historical bibliography of Mecklenburg

Following the path below the southern slope in field FA, we soon come across the grave of Mantus on the right side. Here lies another black gravestone marking the final resting place of the bibliographer Wilhelm Hees. Hees was born on July 28, 1892, in Worms, as the son of a merchant family. He studied philosophy and literature in Tübingen, Leipzig, and Freiburg, completing his studies in Rostock in 1925 with a dissertation titled "Wilhelm Raabe's Political and Cultural Views."

He then prepared for higher service in academic libraries as a volunteer at the University Library in Rostock, and after passing the examination, he found a suitable position at the City Library in Essen in 1928. In 1930, he received the assignment to compile a historical bibliography of Mecklenburg at the Mecklenburg State Library in Schwerin. With diligence and patience, Hees dedicated himself to this arduous task, undeterred by the adversities posed by intolerant National Socialists. Despite everything, the set goal was achieved by 1944. The three-volume historical bibliography of Mecklenburg, compiled over 14 years of painstaking work, was published by Hinstorff Verlag in Rostock. From 1945 to 1949, Dr. Wilhelm Hees served as the director of the Mecklenburg State Library. He passed away on April 20, 1950, and found his final resting place at the cemetery on Obotritenring. The seamless continuation of the work initiated by Hees is owed to Government Senior Secretary Gerhard Barth, whose grave we have already visited
