Ziegelsee

Inside and outside could not be more different

The Ziegelsee in the north of Schwerin is divided into an inner and an outer part by the construction of a road. The water connection between both lakes was left open. From the bridge on Möwenburgstraße, motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists get a beautiful view of both lakes.

The Ziegelinnensee is only half a square kilometer in size and has a lively lakeside promenade. Many benches invite people to linger, and there is usually a lot going on, especially in summer. A landmark on the eastern shore is the storage building. Today a hotel, it used to serve as a grain storage facility. The storage building was built in 1939. Until then, the inland port was mainly used for handling bricks, fertilizers, animal feed, lake sand, wood, and coal. Since there was no direct connection to the Baltic Sea to Wismar and only a rail connection existed, the port was not an economic metropolis. Its significance grew only after the end of World War II. The quay wall was extended from 25 meters to an impressive 294 meters. In 1972, 200,000 tons of goods were handled. The economic downturn for the port at Ziegelinnensee came with the reunification.

Today, the people of Schwerin enjoy taking a walk around the Ziegelinnensee, which takes about 40 to 50 minutes. Joggers, which is also very popular, are, of course, faster. Many tourists also come to the eastern shore – those who stay at the hotel or eat at the associated restaurant. In addition, summer strollers often stop for a coffee or an ice cream and sit in the cozy beach chairs of the hotel. Others use the White Fleet's landing stage. From April to October, excursion ships offer two different routes. One leads, among other places, through the Ziegelaußensee, which is around 2.5 square kilometers in size. Via the Werderkanal, you can reach the Heidensee by boat. The Lange Graben – also called the Wickendorfer Kanal – leads to the Schweriner Außensee.

Locals also use the Ziegelinnensee to swim. However, diving and anchoring are strictly prohibited here because there is still ammunition on the bottom. This was disposed of in the waters at the end of World War II. Discussions about this – and also about complete recovery – keep arising in the city.

Regarding the Ziegelaußensee: A park – on the northwest shore near the clinic – is a listed building, as is the park at Wendenhof on the north shore. If you want to go swimming, you can also drive there by car: On Wickendorfer Straße, you can park your vehicle in a parking lot and then walk to an idyllic bathing meadow – a great view of the Außensee awaits everyone who comes here.

The shore areas of the Ziegelaußensee are natural and part of the EU bird protection area "Schweriner Seen." But there are also biotopes that testify to the lake's importance for species protection: Here you can find watermilfoil, water knotweed, as well as common and smooth hornwort or the common rush. Perhaps even an otter might appear among them.
